Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) is a requirement of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Wherever portable appliances are used outside the home, they must be inspected at regular intervals by a 'competent person'. A good 'rule of thumb' is that a portable appliance is any item of mains powered equipment with a plug on it. PAT Testing has 2 objectives
The testing itself involves a visual inspection (first!) and electrical tests, using calibrated test equipment. We have a test regime for all our Hire equipment. Some items are tested every hire, and others are tested at regular intervals. Many venues operate a policy that any electrical goods brought into their premises must have been PAT Tested. Sometimes they will request proof that the relevant inspection has been carried out. This applies equally to practical props, such as a table lamp, as well as high power equipment like dimmers. It is not our policy to undertake PAT Testing at your premises, but we will PAT Test any items you bring to us. If you want us to test while you wait, an appointment is essential.
